Injectable Treatments

Injectable treatments are effective ways to deliver a substance that is needed without worrying about low absorbtion from oral administration. This allows for a broad range of treatment options, solutions, and injection sites. The naturopathic doctor will help you decide if this is an appropriate treatment form for you.

Our Naturopathic Doctors treat using the principles of Naturopathic Medicine, which start with First Do No Harm. Under this premise they have discovered some very effective treatments in the form of injectable medicine. The following are the most recommended:

Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin that we must get through our diet or it is depleted. Many people do not get enough in their diet or live lives that deplete vitamin B12. If your stores of vitamin B12 get depleted then you start to have symptoms of fatigue, depression, anemia, numbness and tingling in your extremeties, etc…

As you age your ability to absorb B12 decreases and so B12 injections are great for increasing energy. Another population that benefits greatly from the B12 injections is the vegetarian population because they do not get it in their diet in amount or forms that are needed by the body.

The top 5 health benefits of vitamin B 12 are:

  1. It is needed to convert carbohydrates into glucose in the body, thus leading to energy production and a decrease in fatigue and lethargy in the body.
  2. It helps in healthy regulation of the nervous system; reducing depression, stress, brain shrinkage and pain.
  3. It helps maintain a healthy digestive system. Vitamin B12 also protects against heart disease by curbing and improving unhealthy cholesterol levels, protecting against stroke, and high blood pressure.
  4. It is essential for healthy skin, hair, and nails. It helps in cell reproduction and constant renewal of the skin.
  5. Vitamin B 12 helps protect against cancers including breast, colon, lung, and prostrate cancer.

Many health conditions are the result of deficiencies in the body. With the lack of nutrient density in our diets and soil coupled with the extra need required to live in an overpolluted world, our need for nutrients is ever increasing. Our Naturopathic Doctors have a great solution for you.

The Myers’ Cocktail is a vitamin cocktail that provides the replenishment of nutrients, that your cells need, without the worry of absorbtion that taking nutrients orally causes. When you take anything orally it first must be absorbed and then it goes directly to the liver to be broken down. This process reduces the concentration of what was absorbed so that the amount that enters the blood is at a low level. When given an I.V.; whatever is delivered goes first to all the cells of the body and whatever is not absorbed is then taken back to the liver to be broken down. I.V. administration of vitamins and minerals gives greater delivery of nutrients to the cells and this accounts for the therapeutic benefit.

The Myers’ Cocktail is an injectable solution of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that help build your body from the inside. Our Naturopathic Doctors inject the painless solution into your arm over a 15min. time period for most people. There are other combinations of vitamins and minerals given I.V. when needed.

The Myers’ Cocktail is named after physician John Myers, MD, who developed the use of intravenous vitamins and minerals as part of the overall treatment of various medical problems. These medical issues were varied, ranging from asthma and allergies to migraine to chronic fatigue. Below is a shortlist of some of the conditions where the Myers’ Cocktail has been proven successful:

Asthma – A five-year-old boy presented with a two-year history if asthma, with numerous hospitalizations. After isolation of food allergies combined with oral vitamin and mineral supplementation the child experienced marked improvement and went 11 months without any hospital visits. When the asthma did recur he was given a slow IV injection of vitamins and minerals and the symptoms resolved within two minutes. This treatment continued for 8 years as the patient grew up. The patient and his parents reported that IV nutrient therapy worked faster, produced a more sustained improvement, and caused considerably fewer side effects than the conventional therapies he had received previously in the emergency room. This effect was repeated with multiple patients. Some asthma sufferers choose to receive maintenance injections once weekly or every other week during difficult times to keep their condition at bay.

Fatigue – Many patients with unexplained fatigue have responded to the Myers’, with results lasting from a few days to several months. Some patients become progressively healthier with continued injections and are able to eventually stop treatment. Others do not overcome their illness, but periodic injections help them function better.

Fibromyalgia – A 48-year old woman with a 6-year history of fibromyalgia symptoms experienced immediate relief of muscle and joint pain after an initial Myers injection. Monthly injections, combined with elimination of allergenic foods as well as thyroid therapy effectively kept her symptoms at bay and allowed her to function normally. Studies have shown that the Myers’ cocktail is often an effective tool in combating fibromyalgia.

Cardiovascular Disease – A 79-year old man with end-stage heart failure, who was told his heart would last another month, saw a marked improvement with regular injections. Many of his symptoms reversed and he lived to 87. All of the angina and heart failure patients in the study experienced significant improvement with regular Myers’ injections.

Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis – Symptoms of a 38-year old man including nasal congestion, itchy eyes, and fatigue presented each spring for a month. The Myers’ cocktail repeated weekly or as needed successfully controlled his symptoms. Eventually he was able to prevent the onset of symptoms through precautionary injections before hay season.

Narcotic Withdrawal – A 35-year old man addicted to morphine was going through early stages of withdrawal, showing diaphoresis and extreme agitation. Halfway through the injection he was able to sit still, and by the end of the injection his withdrawal symptoms had alleviated. After four consecutive days of Myers’ injections he was able to continue his withdrawal period uneventfully.

Chronic Urticaria – A 71-year old woman had chronic urticaria with hives present somewhere on her body nearly every day for 10 years. After two Myers’ treatments on consecutive days the hives resolved rapidly and did not recur for more than a year.

Hyperthyroidism – A patient treated with the Myers’ over the course of several weeks saw symptoms improve markedly after the first injection. Two weeks later thyroid-function tests returned to normal.

Experience the Benefits of Intravenous Vitamin C

Intravenous Vitamin C is a preferred method of delivery for patients who need fast acting benefits from high doses of vitamin C. Vitamin C has been one of the most extensively studied vitamins and was popularized by the Nobel Prize winner, Linus Pauling.

Vitamin C is a necessary nutrient for human health and vitality and is a nutrient that we can NOT make on our own. Therefore we must consume it in our diet or take it in some other form.

Vitamin C is an essential part of many of the bodies key functions and can thus be used as a treatment if these functions are suboptimal. The following is a list of some of these key functions.

Vitamin C is required for the synthesis of collagen, an important structural component of blood vessels, tendons, ligaments, and bone. This is the proposed mechanism in which vitamin C aids in recovery from injury or tissue damage. We have used it successfully to help speed recovery from surgery, recovery after an injury, and help prevent injury in predisposed individuals.

Vitamin C also plays an important role in the synthesis of the neurotransmitter, norepinephrine. Neurotransmitters are critical to brain function and are known to affect mood.  Vitamin C is required for the synthesis of carnitine, a small molecule that is essential for the transport of fat into cellular organelles called mitochondria, where the fat is converted to energy.  Both of these pathways may be involved in the energy enhancement noted in clinical administration of I.V. vitamin C.

“Research also suggests that vitamin C is involved in the metabolism of cholesterol to bile acids, which may have implications for blood cholesterol levels and the incidence of gallstones.  Vitamin C is also a highly effective antioxidant. Even in small amounts vitamin C can protect indispensable molecules in the body, such as proteins, lipids (fats), carbohydrates, and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), from damage by free radicals and reactive oxygen species that can be generated during normal metabolism as well as through exposure to toxins and pollutants (e.g., cigarette smoke). Vitamin C may also be able to regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamin E. One recent study of cigarette smokers found that vitamin C regenerated vitamin E from its oxidized form.”  -Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State

High doses of Vitamin C have been used in the treatment of cancer, immune enhancing or modulating(colds and flus to immuno-deficiencies), sports performance and recovery, and many forms of chronic disease to list a few.

Vitamin C delivered to the bloodstream in high concentrations could be a potent killer of cancer cells, especially some lymphomas, suggested researchers at the National Institute of Health.

  • This was a laboratory study only, looking at the effects of high doses of vitamin C on cancerous and normal cells. The blood levels of ascorbate in this study could only be achieved in people with intravenous therapy, and not through diet.

Antioxidants are commonly know to help in every health condition. In fact there are text books written claiming that oxidation is the cause of all health problems. Thus, giving antioxidants is an important treatment in many health conditions as well as healthy aging and sports performance. One of the main factors in taking antioxidants is making sure that you get them to the cells not just to your stomach. That is why injections of antioxidants is so effective. Injecting the antioxidants directly into the blood stream gets them to the site of need without the complications of going unharmed through the digestive system into the blood stream.

The main antioxidants that we use in our injections are Vitamin C and Glutathione. Vitamin C injections have become very popular in many health conditions; cancer treatments, sports performance and recovery, cold and flu treatment and prevention, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia to name a few.

GLUTATHIONE is the main antioxidant of the liver. As the main antioxidant of the liver it helps in cleaning the blood and clearing toxins. It is also an antioxidant inside every cell and the intracellular level of glutathione predicts aging.

The following are quotes from different authors on glutathione:

“Without glutathione, other important antioxidants such as vitamins C and E cannot do their job adequately to protect your body against disease.” Breakthrough in Cell Defense, Allan Somersall, Ph.D., M.D., and Gustavo Bounous, M.D. FRCS(C)

“No other antioxidant is as important to overall health as glutathione. It is the regulator and regenerator of immune cells and the most valuable detoxifying agent in the human body. Low levels are associated with hepatic dysfunction, immune dysfunction, cardiac disease, premature aging, and death.” The Immune System Cure, Lorna R. Vanderhaeghe & Patrick J.D. Bouic, Ph.D.

“A review article published in the Annals of Pharmacology stated that glutathione is important in DNA synthesis and repair, protein and prostaglandin synthesis, amino acid transport, detoxification of toxins and carcinogens, enhancement of the immune system, and protection from oxidation and enzyme activations.” The Immune System Cure, Lorna R. Vanderhaeghe & Patrick J.D. Bouic, Ph.D.

Research suggests that abnormally low glutathione levels may increase your risk for Heart Attack. Eric Topol, MD, New England Journal of Medicine.

“Glutathione has potent anti-viral properties – if tissue and serum glutathione levels are significantly increased, the replication of most pathogens are slowed or stopped. Conversely, glutathione deficiency produces a pro-viral effect.” Paul Cheney, M.D., Ph.D. and expert in the treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. GSH detoxifies many pollutants, carcinogens, and poisons, including many in fuel exhaust and cigarette smoke. It retards damage from radiation such as seen with loss of the ozone. Annual Reviews of Biochemistry 52: 711-780 1983

What is glutathione’s role in the body?

“Reduced L-glutathione, most commonly called glutathione or GSH, is often referred to as the body’s “master antioxidant”.  Composed of glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine, this tripeptide helps to detoxify the body and neutralize free radicals while supporting the immune system. It is known for its role in providing antioxidant protection for the body’s tissues, including the arteries, brain, heart, liver, lungs, and skin. Glutathione levels decrease as the body ages.

All cells in the human body are capable of synthesizing glutathione. But the highest concentration of glutathione is found in the liver, making it critically important in the detoxification and elimination of free radicals.  Free radicals are highly reactive compounds created in the body during normal metabolic functions; they can also enter the body through the environment. Accumulation of these compounds can result in oxidative stress, which occurs when the generation of free radicals in the body exceeds the body’s ability to neutralize and eliminate them.

Metabolically, glutathione has many functions. As previously mentioned, glutathione plays a substantial role in the functioning of the body’s immune system. Its antioxidant property makes it vital to white blood cells (lymphocytes)-as it allows them to reach their full potential during the oxygen-requiring activity of the body’s immune response.

White blood cells in their immune response aid in detoxification of the body-and as glutathione levels decrease, so does the body’s ability to eliminate toxins. This leads to the death of white blood cells-thereby weakening the body’s immune system.  Other antioxidants in the body depend on glutathione as well. Glutathione recycles vitamins C and E after they have been oxidized-therefore playing a decisive role in their normal function.” – Wellness Pharmacy 3401 Independence Drive #231 Birmingham, AL 35209

Neural Therapy is a treatment designed to restore optimal neural functioning in the body and thus usually reduces pain. It is based on the knowledge that the nervous system helps to regulate the entire body and any disturbance results in deterioration from health. The therapies restore the regulation of the nervous system and brings optimal health.

The following is a good explanation of nueral therapy taken from Dr Klinghardt (one of the early pioneer’s for neural therapy in North America).

“Neural Therapy is a treatment system for chronic pain and illness. It involves the injection of local anesthetics into autonomic ganglia, peripheral nerves, scars, glands, trigger points, and other tissues. It is believed to act through normalizing the illness-related dysfunction of the nervous system. Even though certain Neural Therapy procedures are widely used in the US (regional anesthesia, epidural injections, trigger-point injections), Neural Therapy as a comprehensive healing system is virtually unknown to most practitioners. In Europe’s German speaking countries it has become one of the most widely used modalities in the treatmentof chronic pain and intractable illness.”

Trigger Point Therapy is a technique designed to release spasmodic muscles that are causing pain or discomfort. Trigger point therapy was originally established with the research of Dr. Janet Travell. Dr. Travell was the personal physician to John F. Kennedy and helped relieve his back pain. The therapy is based on the observation that a tight painful muscle can be released by touching or injecting a trigger point in that muscle. Trigger point therapy resets the neuromuscular signaling and relaxes the muscle. Trigger point therapy can produce a very relaxing effect immediately.

Trigger point therapy works to release painful muscles. Since all muscles work off similar cell signaling, trigger point therapy can be used to treat muscle pain in any area of the body.

Restorative Injection Techniques or Restorative Injection Therapy is the name given to a series of injection techniques that help aid in tissue restoration. The list of injection therapies includes, prolotherapy, neural therapy, trigger point injections, biopuncture, and mesotherapy. These all work on different areas of the body to help restore tissue health.

Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is used when the ligaments or tendons of a joint have been compromised, injured, or lax. Prolotherapy injections use a non-toxic solution injected into the damaged tendon or ligament that causes the tissue to tighten and can even stimulate growth factors in the area of injection. This aids in the healing of the tendon or ligament.

Neural Therapy

Neural Therapy is a type of injection, pioneered by german doctors, that works by resetting the firing patterns in nerves that regulate certain areas of the body. It can help with pain as well as resetting the way organs, muscles, and joints recieve repair signals from the nervous system. Neural Therapy is a treatment designed to restore optimal neural functioning in the body. It is based on the knowledge that the nervous system helps to regulate the entire body and any disturbance results in deterioration from health. Biopuncture

Biopuncture is similar to trigger point therapy or neural therapy in the solutions injected but differs by focusing on injecting into specific acupuncture points related to the site of dysfunction.  This treatment focuses on restoring proper function to the acupuncture meridian that controls an area and in return restores proper function to the area of concern.  It is often used in conjunction with neural therapy.

Mesotherapy

“Mesotherapy is a medical specialty that involves injecting microscopic quantities of natural extracts, homeopathic agents, pharmaceuticals and vitamins into the skin. It can be used to eliminate cellulite, promote weight loss, treat aging skin and redundant (sagging) skin, and rejuvenate the hands and neck.” – http://www.mesotherapy.com/faq/
