Diet and Supplements are helping Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients in Vancouver

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis effects over 1 million people in North America.  It is unclear at this time what causes the condition.  Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis is characterized by four or more of the following, that lasts more than 6 months and are not explained by another medical condition:

  • Impaired memory or concentration
  • Post-exertion malaise, where physical or mental exertions bring on “extreme, prolonged exhaustion and sickness”
  • Unrefreshed sleep
  • Muscle pain (myalgia)
  • Pain in multiple joints (arthralgia)
  • Headaches of a new kind or greater severity
  • Sore throat, frequent or recurring
  • Tender lymph nodes (cervical or axillary)

In our Vancouver clinic we have found that addressing each person as a whole individual has given great results in the midst of so many uncertainties.  Treating why a person is experiencing a condition vs chasing symptoms gives results where little else has.  Read here for more on our approach when treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in the clinic.

Dietary changes and supplementation with specific antioxidants are proving to be beneficial in the treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Studies show wheat, milk, corn, and additives like food colorings, nitrates, and nitrites are linked to CFS.  There is also some promise in research on the following supplements; glutathione, N-acetylcysteine, alpha-lipoic acid, oligomeric proanthocyanidins, Ginkgo biloba, and Vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry).

The article below showcases some of the research around these supplements and the food intolerances being explored in the treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
